Palo Santo is a Spanish word that translates to “holy wood”. Native to the tropical dry forests of Ecuador, Mexico and Peru, Palo Santo is considered sacred wood. The wood from which the oil comes from can only be picked from the forest floor 3-5 years after dying a natural death—live trees are never cut. During this time, a chemical transformation takes place and the sap begins to crystallize and form deposits giving Palo Santo its prized grains of orange and gold. Wood shavings are commonly burned to ward off negative energy and bad spirits. Shamans also use Palo Santo so they can heal those who afflicted with disease.
